Decorate your bedroom with plants

It’s been shown that plants make a room more relaxing, so it stands to reason that you should have some in your bedroom. That’s where you want to be as relaxed as possible.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. It should make you smile when you wake in the morning and feel calm when you go to bed at night. An easy, beautiful way to make your bedroom more inviting is to decorate with plants. We have some quick, simple tips to make your bedroom into a green dream.

Put pot plants on your bedside table

A houseplant on the bedside table will likely be the first thing you look at in the morning, getting you off to a relaxing start. Pick something that’s easy to care for and doesn’t need much light to thrive. That means the same plant will be happy living on either side of a double bed, even if they get different light levels. Plants like Mikey the snake plant or Cassie the zz plant would be ideal.

Place plants where you’ll see them most

In your bedroom, the view you see most is probably the view from bed. Place plants in places you see when you’re sitting in bed. If your bed faces a window, place some plants on the window ledge. Cacti, like Spike, will love a sunny window.

If your bed faces a door, place a large plant to one side of the door. Something like Rick the corn plant is striking and tall, but doesn’t use much floorspace. And it tolerates shadier corners.

Hang plants above the bed

Make yourself a planty bedhead by placing lots of greenery above the bed. There are two ways to do this. One way is to put a shelf above your bed and then fill it with potted plants. A few hanging plants, like Pascal the neon pothos or Jethro the lipstick plant, will soften the look.

The other way is to suspend hanging plants from the ceiling. With this method it’s best to have the plants positioned so they hang slightly behind the head of the bed. Just so you don’t get pothos tendrils tickling your nose when you’re sleeping.

Use them to give character to furniture

Bedrooms need a lot of practical furniture for storage – wardrobes, drawers, etc. – which are useful, but not always the nicest things to look at. Transform them with plants.

Place a small collection of plants on top of a chest of drawers – Pippa the peace lily and Penny the Chinese money plant are great options – or let a shade-tolerant hanging plant, like Rapunzel the golden pothos, hang over one side of a wardrobe. That way you notice the plants, not the furniture.

Surround a mirror with plants

If you have a full length mirror in your bedroom, place some plants either side of it. Try tall plants with interesting leaves, like Chaz the monstera or Ben the ficus benjamina. If they overlap your mirror’s frame they’ll make the room appear bigger, because you’ll only see the reflection.

A plant-covered mirror is also great for selfies.
