Complete guide to hydroponic plant care
Plants that don't need soil to grow? No, they're not magic - they're hydroponic.
Hydroponic houseplants are a great way to bring greenery and life into your home. Unlike traditional soil-based plants, hydroponic plants grow in a nutrient-rich water solution. This allows them to receive all the nutrients they need to thrive without the need for soil. Hydroponic plants are easy to care for and require less maintenance than soil-based plants. However, it is important to understand the basics of hydroponic houseplant care to keep your plants stay healthy and vibrant:
- Keep your hydroponic plant in a bright room but out of direct sunlight
- Change the water every two weeks and make sure the roots are dangling in it, but not fully submerged
- Give a nutrient boost with a little liquid fertiliser in spring and summer
About hydroponic plants
Lots of different types of plants can be grown in water, but we've chosen Sia and Wallace as our hydroponic plants. This method of growing is known as hydroponic planting, which means growing without soil. Your plant will just suck up all the water it needs. You’ve probably read our guidance saying plants don’t like their roots too wet, but that only applies to plants growing in soil. Bacteria breed quickly in very wet soil. That bacteria can attack your plant’s roots and make them rot. Because there’s no soil here, bacteria can’t breed and your plant is perfectly happy with wet roots.
How do I assemble my hydroponic plant?
Our hydroponic plants are delivered in parts - it's better for the plant, your home and the delivery driver. Assembling your hydroponic plant is easy, just make sure you put it together as soon as it arrives.
- Take everything out of the glass bowl.
- Fill the glass bowl with enough water to cover most of the roots, but leaving about two inches clear at the top.
- Place the plant in the bowl, making sure the top of the roots are out of the water and they have enough space to breathe.
- Add the two cork halves around the stem of the plant and secure it in place.
- Change the water every two weeks.
How often should I water my hydroponic plant?
Hydroponic plants require less water than traditional plants as they are already in a nutrient solution. However, it is still important to check the water levels every few days to make sure they remain at the correct level. Change the water every few weeks to keep it clean.
Should I fertilise my hydroponic plant?
In addition to water, plants will also need to be fed with a nutrient solution or liquid fertiliser. This can be done by adding a small amount of the solution to the water every few weeks in spring and summer. This will help the plants receive the necessary nutrients to stay healthy. After a day or so, change the water to keep it clean.
Monitoring your hydroponic plant
It is important to monitor your hydroponic plants on a regular basis to ensure they are healthy and thriving. This means checking for any signs of pests or diseases, as well as checking the nutrient levels in the water. It's also important to check for any signs of wilting or yellowing leaves, as this could indicate a nutrient deficiency.
Hydroponic houseplants are a great way to bring life and colour into your home. With the right care, they can thrive and bring you years of enjoyment. With the tips discussed in this article, you can help your hydroponic plants stay healthy and vibrant.
